This afternoon the New York state Senate voted 24-38 against providing marriage equality to the people of New York. This, coupled with the defeat in Maine back in November, has made for a disappointing end to a year that started out well for the equality movement. Gains have been made, Connecticut, Vermont, New Hampshire, and back in April, my home state of Iowa all achieved marriage equality. It also looks like Washington DC will have it by the end of the year.
Anti-gay forces, such as those of the National Organization of Marriage, and Republican Iowa gubernatorial candidates threaten to try to take way equality from the few places that have achieved it. They continue to try and force America into becoming a Theocracy. It just doesn’t make a whole lot of sense to me. Ever since Obama was sworn in as President, the Republicans have been yelling and screaming, demanding small, limited government (as opposed to what they tried to put in place during the Bush administration), but yet they want to impose government intrusion into my bedroom. They want to be able to dictate who I can and can’t marry. They want to enshrine their Christianity into civil law, destroying any sense of separation between church and state. They seem to be blind to the history of discrimination and persecution that has happened under every other religious based government in the history of Humanity.
