The Iowa State Alcoholic Beverage division will soon take up the topic of banning the sale of 151 proof Everclear within the state. This would add it to the all ready banned sale of 190 proof Everclear. This discussion is coming on the heals of a near death of a Drake University student in a hazing incident that landed him in the hospital with a blood alcohol level of .50 and a case of alcohol poisoning. The incident has cost the Phi Delta Theta fraternity their national charter.
While I think anyone that drinks Everclear is being ridiculous and just asking for trouble I’m not convinced that banning it’s sale all together is really the right move. I heard a spokesperson say on the WHO news this morning that they felt that if banning the 151 proof alcohol would save the life of the occasional student then it would be worth it.
The problem I have with this is that it doesn’t address the real problem which was that a fraternity on the Drake campus felt it was ok to haze a new pledge. Personally, I’d rather see Everclear taxed higher than other alcohols based on it’s content but I think banning it all together is overstepping the limits.
